“Why doesn’t Missoula have a hostel?”

It’s a question we heard (and asked) over and over for more than three years. Finally, in November 2009 -- nearly a decade after Missoula’s last hostel closed up shop -- Hutchins Hostel opened its doors to the public.

The hostel is owned and managed by Dave Loos. A former journalist, Dave moved to Missoula in 2006 for graduate school at the University of Montana. Two years later the business plan for Hutchins Hostel became the centerpiece of his graduate work. Turning dream into reality took another 15 long months!

The Hutch is located on the first floor of a renovated 120-year-old house in one of Missoula’s historic districts, just four blocks from the heart of downtown. In our research we’ve found that over the years the building has been home to a boarding school, hair salon, and – most recently – an art gallery.

Dave purchased the house in April 2009 and immediatedly began a renovation process

aimed at upgrading both the structure and all electrical and mechanical systems in order to create a modern, comfortable and energy efficient hostel for our guests. We think you’ll be pleased with the results.

We believe the hostel serves an important niche of previously overlooked travelers here in Western Montana. We’re talking about budget-minded folks who enjoy meeting other travelers during their journeys; groups of bicyclists and hikers who want nothing more than a hot shower and comfortable bed after a long day; and tourists who don’t need a five-star hotel in order to fully experience all that Missoula has to offer.

Does this sound like you? Then we look forward to seeing you soon!
